Gila Wilderness by Foot

    Photography by Jay Hemphill

This powerful photography exhibit that ran through March 2026 presented more than mere landscape documentation. Hemphill’s images evoke the profound solitude, immense scale, and raw beauty that define the pristine Gila Wilderness landscape.

Each image represented not only technical mastery but also physical dedication, as Hemphill ventured miles into the backcountry with heavy equipment to reach locations accessible only by foot. The resulting photographs captured the essence of untouched wilderness, offering viewers a visceral connection to landscapes that remain largely unchanged since its designation as the world’s first national wilderness area in 1924.
